Atarot
Each Blue Feet tallit has a custom atara.
One option is a woven band of the same color and wing motif as the stripe on your tallit.
The other option is text. On the same warp as your tallit, I weave another piece of cloth framed with the wing motif. I write the Hebrew calligraphy of the text with a fine paintbrush and fabric paint. The letters are permanently heat-set and the atara is stitched to the tallit.
You choose the text. The words may be from the traditional blessing for donning the tallit ("Blessed is the One who has instructed us on the mitzvah of wearing tzitzit," see Numbers 15: 37-41). Or it may be a text of your choosing--a favorite line from a psalm, a particular phrase from the liturgy, a few words from the Torah.
Selecting your atara can be a very powerful spiritual exercise. I encourage you to take your time and explore the experience. Having engaged with many people in the process, I share some reflections about it in the essay "Weaving Tallitot". Tell me, what belongs on your atara?
Here are some of the texts people have chosen for an atara:
| "Open my lips and let my mouth declare Your praise." (Psalm 51)
"For You, silence is praise." (Psalm 65) "Justice, justice, shall you pursue, that you may live." (Deuteronomy 16:20) "The whole world is full of divine glory." (Isaiah 6:3) "I will keep YHVH before me always." (Psalm 16) "May YHVH's face be turned toward you and bestow upon you peace." (Numbers 6:26) "Let us have songs to fill our mouths as full as the sea." (Nishmat Prayer) "Let all acknowledge and let all praise." (Barchu Prayer) |
Contact me to discuss your phrase and whether it will fit on the atara.
Please note, these atarot are available only for Blue Feet tallitot. I do not make them separately.
